Charles Gounod (1818-1893) Petite symphonie (Little Symphony for Wind Instruments) (1885)
Charles Gounod, a renowned French composer best known for his operas, ventured into the realm of wind music with his Petite symphonie in 1885. This charming work, composed for a nonet of wind instruments, reflects Gounod's melodic gift and elegant craftsmanship. The symphony opens with a lively Adagio and Allegretto, followed by a graceful Andante cantabile that showcases the lyrical capabilities of the winds. The work concludes with a spirited Finale, encapsulating the joyful and light-hearted spirit typical of Gounod's style. Tonight's concert features the world premiere of “Equilibrium” by contemporary composer Andres Eloy Rodriguez. Rodriguez, known for his innovative and evocative compositions, has crafted a piece that explores the intricate interplay between ten wind instruments. "Equilibrium" is characterized by its vibrant textures, dynamic contrasts, and rhythmic complexity, reflecting Rodriguez's unique voice in the modern classical landscape. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) Serenade No.10, K.361 (370a), B-flat major (Gran partita) (1783–1784)
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Serenade No.10 in B-flat major, also known as the Gran partita, is one of his most celebrated works for wind ensemble. Composed between 1783 and 1784, this monumental piece is scored for 13 wind instruments, including pairs of oboes, clarinets, basset horns, bassoons, and horns, along with a double bass. The Gran partita is renowned for its exquisite beauty and structural complexity, consisting of seven movements that range from the majestic Largo and Allegro Molto to the playful Minuetto and the poignant Adagio. Each movement showcases Mozart's extraordinary ability to blend lyrical grace with intricate counterpoint, creating a rich tapestry of sound that continues to captivate audiences.
